One And Done Mentality

Written by Dr. Daniel Kimbley

Looking to accomplish more in life?

Is it making more money? Is it better relationships, possibly even a better sex life? Or is it simply feeling better or more comfortable in your own skin?

Regardless of the big vision you have for your life, there’s one simple principle that will help you achieve ALL that you’re looking to gain.

It’s simple, SHOW UP.

You’ve all had great successes in your lives, and I’d be willing to be that those successes did not result from a one and done mindset. Whether it’s diet or exercise, you didn’t eat vegetables for one meal and then achieve your health goals. You didn’t just go to the gym one time, walk on the treadmill and magically get into shape. No, it took time, effort and continually showing up with a commitment to make yourself better.

The same could be said for results in your chosen career, New Years resolutions, or just about any other aspect of your life. Consistently showing up is the first step in getting you the results that you want.

I’m going to have you consider that simply showing up will get you nearly eighty-percent of the results you’re looking for. The other twenty-percent? Contributing to what you show up for.

That means showing up for the people you care about most, showing up to work, and showing up to what matters. And then contributing something of value after you show up.

Think about it, how many times have you felt unmotivated to go to the gym, but once you get there you get a workout in and feel amazing after. If you’re anything like me, this happens at least once a week and I’ve never regretted showing up. The same can be said for anything you’re looking for.

Trying to learn a new skill or quit a bad habit? I bet you didn’t just try for one day and master what you wanted. It takes unrelenting commitment for months on end to accomplish it.

While in chiropractic school, I used to show up to every event and seminar and try to hang out with the super successful doctors who eventually came to be my mentors. Had I not showed up in those early days, I would have never received the mentorship that I did. The mentorship that ultimately led me to have the confidence to start my own practice right out of school-even when I had many people telling me it couldn’t be done.

My secret? Showing up.

I know this isn’t new information.

The same can be said for the care we provide in our office. In order to have it all, our clients commit to the care we recommend because they understand this important principle.

I didn’t arbitrarily mention making more money, having a better sex life, or feeling more comfortable as your authentic self in the beginning of this post.

These results are just scratching the surface of the REAL results that clients in our office have had. How did they get these results? Valuing the fact that in order to accomplish more, they had to have an optimally functioning master control system-the nervous system–in their bodies. They also value showing up and trusting the process.

The care we provide stimulates the brain in a way that allows people the capacity to show up and play full-out. Leading chiropractic researchers have found over multiple studies that the chiropractic adjustment has a host of positive effects on the brain. “This is solid scientific evidence that adjusting the spine changes the way the prefrontal cortex of the brain is processing information.”1 The coolest part about this research is that the prefrontal cortex of the brain is responsible for a host of behaviors that are highly important for willpower-the willpower to show up. This front part of the brain is responsible for behavior, memory and attention, goal directed tasks, decision making, and motivation.

To stay on top of the game in every aspect of life and create the lives we want, we cannot have a “one and done” mentality.
