Learning Disabilities and Lasting Success

Helping kids be more successful in school and in life is of utmost importance to us here at Nexus Family Chiropractic. We value that everyone has the same potential to be successful, and certain lifestyle choices we make for our kiddos can ensure lasting success.

This includes children with sensory disorders and other learning disabilities that can arise with even the most challenged kiddos.

Looking at the statistics for Autism alone is staggering. According to the CDC, in 2000, the number of kiddos diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) was 1 in 150. In 2014, that number increased to 1 in 59.1

The CDC also estimated that 6.1 million children had ADHD, and that 1 in 6 kids have a sensory processing disorder of some kind. .2

Clearly, more drugs aren’t the answer.

There are 3 classifications of learning disabilities

1.) Developmental Speech and Language Disorders (expressive etc.)

2.) Academic Skills Disorders (dyslexia, etc.)

3.) Motor Skill Disorders (ASD, ADHD)

All of these classified learning disabilities have one very important thing in common–they are neurological in nature. In other words, they each involve some processing malfunction of the central nervous system (brain and/or spinal cord).

In other words, when the brain doesn’t communicate properly with the rest of the body, these types of developmental disorders can arise. However, this information isn’t new, we have known this since the late 1950s.

Delecato found that “in children with dyslexia and learning disabilities there was a functional disturbance to the appropriate organization of higher centers of the central nervous system.” .3

Interestingly, the higher centers of the central nervous system (the brain) can only be appropriately stimulated when the joints of the spine are moving properly.

A leading researcher in the field, Heidi Haavik, found that chiropractic adjustments directly influence posture, balance, brain integration and nervous system activation.4The brain integration and nervous system activation processes that Dr. Haavik speaks of directly control our health and ability to think critically, clearly, and rationally.

A group of authors in 2015 stated, “we believe there is enough evidence to support the use of chiropractic treatment on children who have been previously diagnosed with neurodevelopmental disorders, especially ASD and ADD/ADHD.”5

It’s clear that in order to ensure the health, academic, and long-term success of your loved ones, you must be sure that they have an optimally functioning nervous system.

Fortunately, checking the body for interference to the nervous system from birth and through every phase of life has been proven to have an immediate and direct, positive impact on brain function. Schedule a chiropractic check-up for you and your loved ones today.
