Would you rather pay one million dollars in taxes or ten million dollars in taxes?
Go ahead answer. Take as long as you’d like, it’s not a trick question.
While many of you are probably thinking that the OBVIOUS answer is “I’d prefer to pay LESS in taxes”, and choose the one-million-dollar option.
What if I asked the same question inside of your life. If you could be a better or worse parent, which would you choose?
If you could be more present or less present as a spouse, which would you choose?
What about inside of what you do for a living. Would you rather make more money or less money?
What about with your health? Would you rather be healthier, or less healthy?
Answers to these questions are obvious.
And just like the answers to the questions above, I’m going to have you consider that paying MORE–ten million dollars in taxes–is the better option.
Paying more money in taxes is nothing more than proof that you’ve been more productive, created more value for people, and made more money overall.
The only way to ever pay more in taxes is to be more productive. That means making more money, being more present with family, creating more value in your children’s lives, and creating more value in the lives of people you interact with daily.
The idea of taxes is interesting because it literally means “a strain or heavy demand”.
So, if having more presence to spend time with family, being a better spouse, a better parent, is taxing, the questions arises then, what can be done so that when we are taxed more we are best able to adapt to the imposed demands?
The answer lies within you, and it begins with something you’ve built on your own with no help at all.
It’s your nervous system, your brain and spinal cord.
In the 1980s neurobiologist Roger Sperry was named with a Nobel Prize for finding that “90% of the stimulation and nutrition to the brain comes from movement of the spine”. In other words, if the joints of your spine are moving properly, then your brain will get the stimulation it needs to function properly on all levels.
The interesting thing about having properly moving joints in the spine is that they feed the part of the brain responsible for connection to others, focus, decision making, motivation, and a host of other very important skills responsible for success throughout life.
In a 2016 study, neurophysiologist Heidi Haavik found that, “[There] is solid scientific evidence that adjusting the spine changes the way the prefrontal cortex of the brain is processing information from the arm. It demonstrates we change the way the brain works and shows that spinal function impacts brain function. One of the most interesting things about the changes we observed was that the prefrontal cortex is responsible for behaviour, goal directed tasks, decision making, memory and attention, intelligence, processing of pain and emotional response to it, autonomic function, motor control, eye movements and spatial awareness.”

Again, I’ll ask the question, would you rather pay more tax or less tax. In your business? With your spouse? With your kids? With your health?
Having a healthy brain will give you more capacity to deal with the added tax that comes with being a better business person, being a better parent, better spouse or more motivated.
And the opposite is true.
